Ken MacDonald

March 17th, 2018

It is with a heavy heart that we have to tell you of the passing of long-time Spring Bull stalwart Ken MacDonald.

Ken was known for his beautifully crafted whimsical, funny and moving statements in steel and other materials.  He was gracious, good natured, funny and always a good companion.  We will miss him terribly at Spring Bull as will his wife, Robie and extended family.  Our heart goes out to them in this time of sadness and we join in mourning the loss of Ken.

Here are  some quotations from Spring Bull member emails:

With much sadness, I must tell you of Ken MacDonald’s passing early yesterday morning. He was surrounded by his love ones. Ken was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and a creative artist, We at Spring Bull Gallery were extremely lucky to not only show his work but receive his council, share his humor and subject of a tender smile. Our hearts and prayers go to Robie and their extended family. The obituary will be in the Kingstown Standard Times. Church and burial services will be private but Robie said there would be a memorial at Greenway, across from St. Paul’s Church Wickford on Saturday, March 24th (or in the Church hall if weather uncooperative). She told me Ken wanted to have it there where his art was displayed during the festivals, and that his favorite foods would be served: soup, crusty bread and wine. As Mike said “We have lost another of our BEST”.

“Heaven has a new Angel and the trumpets announced his entrance with much fan fare! We are so blessed to have this amazing Gentleman touch our lives with his tremendous talents, his dazzling smile, sense of humor that made everyone laugh and smile from an inner core and his passion for Life and love of his family. God bless you dear Ken.

“We’re so sorry to hear this. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Robie and the rest of Ken’s family. Ken was such a wonderful person , he will be missed by all.”

“I have been very sad since your last e-mail regarding Ken and now I am even more devastated to learn of his passing. He was such an upbeat part of Spring Bull and he will be so missed by all of us. His work is wonderful and so light hearted!”

“Ken will be remembered in so many ways for his kind and generous spirit, the many ways he extended friendship and humor to all who knew him. He will be missed!”

“So sad, I just cannot imagine not spending time with him again. He was truly a joy. I send him this photo a week ago of the little sculpture he did. One of my favorites. Just wanted to share.

Bettie Sarantos Welcomes the Year of the Dog

February 24th, 2018

The oldest and most important festival in China is the Spring Festival known in the West as the Chinese New Year. The date is determined by the lunar/solar calendar so the date of the holiday varies from late January to mid-February. It arrives with the second new moon after the Winter Solstice. Like the West, the East has a zodiac but the Eastern
system has a cycle of twelve years, instead of months. The Chinese apply the five elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth) into the Chinese calendar. This year the element associated with the Dog is Earth.

Dog years are considered filled with prosperity but only after determination and hard work. Fights for the weak and underprivileged will take place all year and moral issues will be of major concern. There will be moments of pleasure since many of the best entertainers were born in the Year of the Dog.
